The Forestry Commission has set ambitious operational priorities for itself in 2024.
The Commission intends to supervise the successful completion of reclamation and revegetation activities in mined-out sites within the Denyau Shelterbelt, Supuma, and Afao Hills Forest Reserves.
It also looks to submit Legal Acquisition Findings (LAF) for Rosewood to the CITES Secretariat, Geneva, and obtain approval for the Rosewood quota.
The Commission further intends to cut sod for the Koforidua Zoo project as well as build a regional office for Western North and a District office for Kyebi, in the Eastern region
Speaking at the 2023 end-of-year media briefing by deputy Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission, Mr Nyadia Sulemana Nelson informed journalists that the Commission in 2024 would commence construction works on converting the old Wildlife Training Center into affordable guesthouses.
The Forestry Commission would, “Complete documentation for additional financing and procurement process for the construction supervision of works in Shai Hills Resource Reserve, Kakum and Mole National Parks to begin under the Ghana Tourism Development Project.”
The Commission according to Mr Nelson, would organize a sensitization workshop for wood and wood-products exporters on the requirements of the European Union Deforestation-free Regulations (EUDR) and also conduct a study on the impact of VPA and its associated Wood Tracking System on the timber industry.
Mr Nelson pointed out that in as much as the Commission anticipates positive progress in 2024, he lamented that there continued to exist operational challenges including
Illegal Mining, Illegal Logging, bushfires, Cattle Grazing among other environmental threats.
He added, “We acknowledge that we have substantial work ahead.it is also important to emphasize that the tasks are achievable with your continuous support.”
