‘Encourage the youth to partake in decision making’ – UN Youth Ghana

United Nations Youth Ghana has marked this year’s UN Day celebration by encouraging the youth to actively partake in decision-making especially with issues that affect them.

Speaking to Ghanaweb, the Country Head for UN Youth Ghana, Lilian Sally Addo championed the youth to be change agents by being out outspoken to eliminate ignorance on happenings in society.

“Every youth must be part of decision-making. The youth must be made to come out and talk. All this is towards peace and security…if you are part of decision making you know better than somebody influencing you to fight or support any activity that is uncalled for,” she said.

UN Youth Ghana is a civil society, on NGO status, which has been working in line with the United Nations’ general aim of maintaining peace and security.

Also, with the goal of mobilizing the youth to work in line with attaining the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Resolution 2250, 17 ambassadors have been deployed to educate the youth about the importance of these goals.

The UN Youth Ghana Volunteers who were present at the celebration were encouraged to guide their minds by taking actions that will ensure that the world gets better.

Country Head, Lilian Sally Addo also asked for support from partners to help intensify the works of the UN Youth Ghana.

“We are an NGO status but we are seriously modelling the UN, without partners we cannot survive. We want to build libraries everywhere, the communities that we go to have needs. We have an organization that is willing to give us 40-footer container of medical supplies every single month but UN Youth Ghana don’t have money, we do not know how to clear these items, we need help of partners and government”, she explained.

She added that there is a global call for the youth to get involved with matters that will help make a difference in communities and country as a whole.

About Resolution 2250

In December 2015 the United Nations Security Council adopted resolution 2250, the first ever thematic resolution on Youth, Peace and Security.

-Recognizing that youth should actively be engaged in shaping lasting peace and contributing to justice and reconciliation, and that a large youth population presents a unique demographic dividend that can contribute to lasting peace and economic prosperity if inclusive policies are in place.

– Recognizing that the rise of radicalization to violence and violent extremism, especially among youth, threatens stability and development, and can often derail peacebuilding efforts and foment conflict, and stressing the importance of addressing conditions and factors leading to the rise of radicalization to violence and violent extremism among youth, which can be conducive to terrorism.

-Noting the important role youth can play further as positive role models in preventing and countering violent extremism, which can be conducive to terrorism, and fuels conflict, inhibits socioeconomic development and fosters regional and international insecurity.
