Ghana should take agricultural development seriously for wealth creation – Bishop

The Right Reverend Christopher Nyarko Andam, Methodist Bishop of Kumasi, has said it was imperative that the nation increases budgetary allocation for the agricultural sector.

This, he said, was required for more research work, infusion of science and technology, as well as extension services to augment best practices and expansion of the sector to bring significant improvement in the economy.

Bishop Andam said for a country whose economy depended largely on agriculture, the sector ought to be given the requisite priority and investment to create jobs and wealth for the masses.

He was speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Kumasi, on the sideline of the commemoration of the ‘Covenant Sunday’ at the Adum Wesley Cathedral.

‘Covenant Sunday’ is an important day on the almanac of the Methodist Church Ghana (MCG) and the occasion is used to sensitize members to remain committed to the tenets and ideals of Methodism.

Bishop Andam, who expressed general optimism about the economy vis-à-vis the policies, programmes and projects being pursued by the government, said development is a shared responsibility and it is incumbent on the citizenry to work hard in their respective endeavours to realize the nation’s development agenda.

The Methodist Bishop advised Ghanaians especially the youth to be wary of the craze for money and materialism saying the current trend where some of them resorted to spiritual means in order to get rich within the shortest possible time defied the laws of nature.

“Money is earned through hard work. Our youth should, therefore, take their time and also delight in always engaging in decent work for their own good,” he said.

Bishop Andam advised ministers of the Gospel to be wary of the way in which they interpreted prophecies to the public in order not to create tension in the society.
