The Ghana Meteorological Agency has ruled out climate change as the reason why Ghana is experiencing rains in October.
Public Relations Officer of the Agency, Papa Nii Clegg in an interview with Joy News said the change is not new and forecast more rains in the coming weeks.
“The rains we are experiencing in October is not unusual. It could be surprising but it is not unusual,” he said.
There are two rain seasons in Ghana. The heaviest rain in the south is from April until June, while in the north, the season is continuous, giving rain from April until October.
Lighter rains are, however, possible during September and October in Ghana’s south. This is usually absent, but that has not been the case in 2019.
Heavy rains have already fallen and more is forecast for the rest of the weeks in October. This has left Ghanaians in a state of confusion with many attributing the change in weather patterns to climate change.
But the Meteorological Agency says there is no cause for panic. The rains are absolutely normal.
Mr Clegg explained “it is clouds that produce rainfall and once you have the cloud in your sub-region and you have low pressure and the wind’s force is not strong, it means the rains will come down and you will experience either moderate or heavy rains.
“That is what we are experiencing presently and we cannot attribute it to clime change,” he added.
The rains should, however, cease in the second week of November for areas in the Southern sector. The Northern sector on the other hand, will stop experiencing rainfall by the end of October.
