Residents at ‘war’ with Assemblyman over open defecation

Residents of Denase in the Afigya Kwabre North District are up in arms against their Assemblyman whom they have dubbed ‘dormant Honourable’.

Public Agenda has learned that unless the unexpected happens, there is a high probability that the Assemblyman for Denase Electoral Area in the Afigya Kwabre North District of Ashanti Region, Hon Anthony Oteng will be shown the red card by residents of the area.

Public Agenda has learnt that almost half of the people in the Denase Electoral Area have accused the ‘Honourable’ as “dormant Honourable”. At the time of filing this report plans were advanced for the residents to stage an anti-Assemblyman demonstration to register their displeasure and preparedness to unseat him from his position despite the fact that he has the backing from the District Assembly which is under the Local Government Ministry.

Information made available to this correspondent indicates that Hon. Oteng was given the mandate to administer the area about two years ago.

Sources said his first five months in office have been anything but impressive and attracted the people’s attention as he showed any concrete results, even though he initially showed some commitment.

The Assemblyman has added salt to injury by imposing levies on his people under the guise of raising funds for projects such as public toilets, bulbs for streets lighting, maintenance of faulted hand pump boreholes and setting up of Information centre and Community centre.

It is alleged that even though the Assemblyman collected several ‘millions of cedis’, the projects have not materialized, thus compel ling the elders of the town to draw his attention, and demand accountability which it was said, brought a conflict between the elders and Hon. Oteng. The Elders also allege that, he treated them with contempt.

Though the Assem-blyman was under pressure to render account, what triggered, the current action was that the residents lack toilets (place of convenience) to attend to nature’s call. This has led to open defecation at the outskirts of the town.

Another serious area the residents bitterly complained was how various heaped dumpsites have been left unattended to for the past ten years, thus breeding mosquitoes that could lead to an epidemic.

The Assemblyman has allegedly not drawn the District Assembly’s attention for immediate action.

Meanwhile when our Correspondent rang the District Chief Executive, Hon. Kwasi Karikari Acheamfour for his reaction his phone was out of coverage area.
