Spending on children’s education better than on funerals- MP to parents

Member of Parliament (MP) for the Trobu constituency in the Greater Accra region, Moses Anim,  has advised parents to invest more in their children’s education than they do in funerals.

Speaking on Onua FM’s current affairs programme, Ghana Dadwen, Monday, the MP who doubles as the Majority Chief Whip asked parents to use the Free Senior High school policy as an opportunity to save for the furtherance of their children’s education.

According to him, parents should not spend excessively on funerals and parties simply because the government has taken up the cost of their children’s secondary education.

“…but now that government has taken that part, parents should not spend these monies on funeral cloths and picnics”, he told host Nana Yaw Opare.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, in fulfillment of his Free Senior High School campaign promise, rolled out the policy last year September, making good his resolve to ensure accessible, equitable, quality and life-changing education for every Ghanaian child.

A year on, the statistics have shown there has been a significant increase in enrolment at the senior high school. The numbers have however increased beyond the available spaces in the schools hence the introduction of a double-track system as an intervention measure.

Accordingly, it is the expectation of the MP that Parents will be able to save enough for the university education of their children without having to take loans.

He maintained that if parents start saving GHȼ500 monthly from the money they would have paid for the secondary education of their children, they will be able to accumulate enough by the time their children will complete.

Mr. Anim explained the efforts of the government are geared towards the fulfillment of Chapter 5(2) of the 1992 Constitution which provides for progressively free education.
